Rural and remote road safety

Regional residents make up about 65 per cent of road deaths despite representing only 28 per cent of Australia’s population.

People living in rural and remote areas typically drive longer distances on worse roads than their metropolitan counterparts.

The per capita regional road deaths rate is almost five times higher than the metropolitan rate.

These proportions have been largely unchanged over the past 10 years.

The Road Safety Research Program has begun stakeholder consultation and workshops, seeking to elicit research proposals with strong potential to ameliorate the nation’s rural and remote road safety crisis.

The RSRP’s rural and remote focus area is currently in its initial development phase. More project details will be available in 2025.
