In the 12 months to 30 June 2024, road deaths rose by 11.7 per cent compared to the previous corresponding period—1,310 deaths up from 1,173 deaths in the 12 months to 30 June 2023.
Road fatalities were 9.9 per cent higher than the June 2023 quarter’s 283 deaths.
Deaths fell by 3.7 per cent from the March 2024 quarter (323 deaths) to the June 2024 quarter (311 deaths), but the March 2024, December
2023 and September 2023 quarters were the three deadliest quarters for road fatalities since the beginning of 2018.
Australia remains off-track to achieve National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) targets for reducing total deaths or deaths of children.
