RAA calls for end to road safety ratings secrecy

State governments should publish secret road safety ratings to help ensure taxpayer money is invested in road projects with the greatest public benefits, South Australia’s motoring club told an Adelaide radio station on Friday.

The RAA is backing the AAA’s call for governments to publish Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP) ratings so Australians have a clearer picture of the state of our roads.

In a 5AA interview with David Penberthy and Will Goodings, RAA Senior Manager for Road Safety Charles Mountain noted the South Australian Government had information on star ratings for nearly all of the state’s highway network.

“It’s not currently publicly available and we believe it should be so the public can see the state of play on our key highways and that helps them understand why sections of road will receive funding,’’ Mr Mountain said.

“When we’ve got limited resources for road safety and improving the road network, it’s important to ensure we’re getting the best possible outcomes.”

Mr Mountain said the public needed to be assured governments were investing wisely to make roads safer.

“It’s a critical part of ensuring that we progressively bring down the number of crashes, serious injuries and lives lost on our roads. Part of that is for the community to understand the condition of our roads.”
