WHAT IS IN A LITRE OF PETROL?
There are a host of factors that make up the price of fuel at the bowser. In the March 2023 quarter, the cost of the actual refined petrol product made up around 49.9 per cent of the average pump price.
Another 34.4 per cent of the price was made up of taxes. This includes the Federal Government’s fuel excise, which imposes a tax of 47.7 cents per litre (indexed in February 2023 – previously 46 cents per litre from 28 September 2022) and 10 per cent GST.
In the March 2023 quarter, wholesale and retail costs made up the remaining 15.7 per cent (Source: ACCC).
