When planning your next driving holiday don’t forget the three most important documents – your passport, vaccination certificate and an International Driving Permit (IDP). For work or leisure, if you’re driving overseas an IDP is a must. Check your destination’s IPD requirements & apply online now.
Japan is an increasingly popular destination for Australian travellers, and a road trip is one of the best ways to see the Land of the Rising Sun.
The Japanese drive on the left, and they are courteous and patient drivers. The roads are in good condition (although often narrow), and the country’s car and motorcycle rental companies offer excellent service (but make sure you get a car with English-capable GPS).
Driving offers more choice and flexibility, and it lets you get away from the busy train lines and major roads to explore Japan’s mountains, forests and villages.
But keep in mind that Japanese authorities are sticklers for rules – and the rules require that people using Australian driver licences in Japan must also hold a current international driving permit (IDP).
That applies not only to cars and motorbikes, but also to the popular Mario Kart go-karts that are available to drive on the streets of many Japanese cities.
Even if you don’t intend to hire a car, remember to get an IDP before you leave Australia so you can enjoy the uniquely Japanese experience of driving a go-kart through the inner city (usually in an anime costume!)
