Privacy Statement

The Safer Roads web pages are contained within the Australian Automobile Association Web site.  Personal information collected by the Australian Automobile Association's web site is treated as confidential and is protected by the Privacy Act 1988.

Personal information is information relating to an individual whose identity is apparent, or can reasonably be ascertained, from the information or opinion provided.

Site Visit Information Collected

Our Internet Service Provider (WebCentral), collects information about the users of our site in order to provide aggregated statistical information about the number of users of our site and other user information to us through a statistical software package. This information is stored in log files located on our ISPs server computers.

Specific information collected by our ISP for our web site statistical package from the users of this site includes:

• Your Internet Protocol (IP) address

  • For people using home dial-up connections this will most likely be a random IP address (or more correctly series of numbers) provided by your ISP and will most likely change every time you log onto the internet

  • For users of a network, basic firewall technology will make it impossible to trace back an internet session to a particular user, rather it will appear as though the network were the user
     

• Your Reverse Domain Name Server (Reverse DNS)

  • This is usually the address of the server to which a user is connected to the internet and does not provide a direct link back to a user
     

• The date, time and duration of your visit to our web site
   

• The pages that you accessed and the files that you downloaded during your visit to our web site

  • This includes web page content, such as pictures, that is automatically displayed on your computer
     

• The previous site you visited directly before you came to our site and directly after you left

  • This information is only collected if you clicked on a link that directed you to or from our site such as through an Internet search engine or a link on our site. This information is not collected if you typed our web address into your browser or a new web address into your browser after you had finished looking at our web site
     

• Your browser and operating system versions

  • Only information such as "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Win32) " is collected - no other local computer system information is collected

Access to Information Collected

The Australian Automobile Association does not store, copy or backup any of the log files generated by our ISP for our web site statistics package. We therefore undertake not to distribute these log files to any party.
 

In the unlikely event that a law enforcement agency or other government agency requires access to any log files generated by our ISP for our web site for legal or criminal reasons they will have to approach our ISP to obtain them.
 

Personal Information Collected

The Australian Automobile Association will only record your email address in the event that you opt to send us an email. Your email address will only be used for the purposes to which you originally sent the email. In the event that you send us an email we will undertake not to add your email address to any email mailing list or to use your email address in any other way without your consent.

Other personal information collected by us, for example through the use of an online form, will only be collected by lawful and fair means.  This information will be used for a lawful purpose and will be collected with your consent.  The purpose of collection should be clear and explicit.

Cookies

Neither the Australian Automobile Association nor our Internet Service Provider utilises cookies for the collection or storage of personally identifiable information in any publicly accessible area of our web site. However, our Transport Statistics Database does utilise per session cookies. Per session cookies are automatically deleted after you leave our site and are used to ensure users receive the correct search results when a search is undertaken. No personally identifiable information is stored or collected during this process.

If you wish to block or disable cookies, the Transport Statistics Database should, in most cases, continue to function.
