Cyclists
|
Over the past ten years, 482 cyclists have died in
road crashes. More than 4 out of 10 fatalities involved our
most vulnerable age groups; seniors over 60 years and children under 14
years of age. Nearly one out of every four fatalities involved children
alone. It's time to make our roads safer for everyone.
When it comes to a question of metal versus bone, metal will always win!

What
can be done?
Actions that save lives:
-
Provide safety islands at vulnerable pedestrian/cyclist
crossing points;
-
Enhance signage and pavement markings to indicate
pedestrian crossings for all road users;
-
Greater use of speed and red light cameras at
susceptible intersections;
-
Improve roads to allow for pedestrian
cycle
crossings;
-
Enforce speed restrictions at school pedestrian
crossings;
-
Improve intersection design;
-
Better locate crossings to maximise line-of-sight for
oncoming vehicles and other road users;
-
Improve signage, pavement markings and lighting at all
pedestrian crossings;
-
Install auditory pedestrian signal devices and retime
pedestrian crossing signals.
You can help make a difference.
Insist your local, state and federal politicians fix aging, congested roads,
improve signage and lighting, to make travel safer for kids, for our parents,
for our friends – for everyone.
