The Costs

Road safety is more than just a transport issue.  It is a 'whole of community issue.

Every time someone crashes, the police are involved.  Every time someone is injured, they see their doctor or end up in hospital.  Every time traffic stops for a crash, dollars are wasted in productivity.

And inevitably, every time there is a serious crash, families and friends suffer.

Road safety is, in reality, a preventable public health issue.

Get the Facts

We waste more than $40 million every day on road crashes.

The total cost of road crashes is estimated to be more than $15 billion every year.  Each fatal crash costs Australian society more than $1.7 million.

In total, the amount we spend each year on road crashes is the same as our defence budget, 3 times the higher education budget, and is equivalent to 3% of GDP.

We need to invest more in road safety.  Investment in road safety provides returns that cannot be matched by any other investment in transport.

The Black Spot Program

A recent report by the Bureau of Transport and Regional Economics says that the Federal Black Spot program, which targets the most dangerous roads, delivers huge benefits.

For every $1 invested in the Black Spot program, there is a $14 in lives saved, injuries avoided and other related costs.
