Australia's peak motoring body, the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), tonight acknowledged the ongoing commitment to building road infrastructure as part of the Federal Government's "steady as she goes" budget.

AAA's Director of Technical Services, Craig Newland, said the Government's commitment for the Nation Building Program to bring on, progress or complete a range of projects would make Australian roads safer.

"While there is no new money in this budget for road infrastructure projects, the Government has maintained its commitment to ongoing development of the Australian national road network to meet the needs of Australian motorists, their families and all road users," Mr Newland said.

"Further, the provision of $1 billion to the Australian Rail Track Corporation to modernise and upgrade the interstate rail freight network should see freight off the roads, which is also good news for motorists.

"The lack of new roads funding in this Budget reinforces the points raised in the Henry Taxation Review, which identified that the current model for road funding was unsustainable.

"The failure to introduce a road user charging system is a lost opportunity to shift to a sustainable funding model for future investment in urgently required infrastructure and to address congestion problems in our cities."
