Australia's peak motoring body, the Australian Automobile Association, today welcomed the Henry Tax Review for its positive proposals aimed at reforming the Australian taxation system in general and some specific elements surrounding road charging and fuel taxes.

AAA Chief Executive, Mike Harris, said the Henry Review had made a number of proposals in line with the strong case put forward by AAA and Australia's motoring clubs in their submissions.

This included proposals for a restructuring of the fuel excise, currently 38 cents per litre, to be replaced by a road user charge which would see motorists paying to access the road network then paying for their usage of the system.

"We are pleased to see the Henry Review has recognised this and included a road user charge in its recommendations," Mr Harris said.

"This change includes a proposed two-part regime of registration fees and variable rates based on road usage and wear and tear.

"AAA and the motoring clubs will now look to make strong representations to the Federal Government for some time line on the introduction of a road user charging system."

AAA also noted the establishment of the State Infrastructure Fund as a positive step in continued investment in road and public transport infrastructure.
