Raymond Grigg appointed President of FIA Region II (Asia-Pacific Region)
Australia’s peak motoring group, the Australian Automobile Association is pleased to announce that AAA President Raymond G Grigg was recently elected as President of FIA Region II (Asia-Pacific Region).
The Federation Internationale de L’Automobile (FIA) is the global federation of the world’s leading motoring organisations. FIA Region II comprises 16 motoring clubs (including the AAA) located in the Asia-Pacific Region.
It is first time in 13 years a representative from an Australian motoring club has held the position. The appointment is for 2 years.
“It is a huge honour to be elected as President and I thank all delegates for their support. I also thank outgoing President Bernard Tay for his contribution during his tenure” Ray Grigg stated. “My appointment will enable Australia to play a leading role in the Asia-Pacific region and achieve the aims outlined in the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety.”
The Decade of Action aims to stabilise then reduce global road deaths. It aims to achieve this objective through an ‘Action Plan’ with targets for raising helmet and seat belt use, promoting safer road infrastructure and protecting vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. The Decade of Action will be launched around the world on 11 May 2011.
The Make Road Safe Campaign spearheaded by the FIA has called for a 50 per cent reduction on the projected number of deaths and serious injuries by 2020.
“As one as of the major developed countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Australia has an obligation to set a good example to others and provide assistance to developing countries in the region as their transport networks continue to grow” explained Mr Grigg.
