Pacific Highway Is a National Priority
The peak national motoring body, the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), has welcomed a commitment announced today by the Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, to support additional funding of $2.1 billion to complete the duplication and upgrade of the Pacific Highway.
"The completion of works to duplicate and upgrade the Pacific Highway is a national priority," AAA Executive Director Andrew McKellar explained.
"The Pacific Highway is a critical part of the national freight network and carries well in excess of a quarter of a million vehicles every day", he said.
"The AAA has previously released research showing that almost the entire length of the Pacific Highway remains one of highest risk roads in Australia, based on the number of casualty crashes".
"It is an unfortunate reality that too many people are needlessly killed or seriously injured as result of crashes on this stretch of highway".
"Better long-term planning and a new approach to infrastructure funding are urgent priorities for national economic reform," said Mr McKellar.
