Increased Road Funding Welcomed
Australia’s peak motoring organisation – the Australian Automobile Association – tonight welcomed the increased road funding to be paid immediately, as announced in the Budget.
AAA Executive Director, Lauchlan McIntosh, said the increased funding would allow major road projects as well as local road maintenance to be escalated.
“The extra $2.4 billion available in 2005-06 is an immediate investment in roads, based on our reading of the Budget figures,” Mr McIntosh said.
“It provides money immediately to the States and local government.
“We now expect the States to come to the party and get on with the job of spending the money and committing some of their own funds.
“Five people die every day on Australian roads and it is to be hoped that this funding will go some way to improving black spots and major roads in the interests of Australian motorists, workers and families.”
