Australian Government 5-Star Fleet Decision Will Make Real Safety Gains: States Must Follow

4.5.2011

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) has today welcomed the announcement that all Australian Government fleet car purchases will be required to have a 5-star ANCAP safety rating from 1 July this year.

Light commercial vehicles will require a minimum 4-star rating from 1 July next year, subject to operational requirements.

"This announcement is a step in the right direction" said Greg Goodman, Acting Executive Director. "In a few years these cars will end their fleet service and be sold into the Australian community, giving consumers greater choice in purchasing safer second hand vehicles. AAA calls for any State Government that hasn't already adopted a 5-star fleet safety policy to do so immediately, now the Australian Government has shown the way."

AAA is a founding member and strong supporter of ANCAP.

AAA recommends that consumers purchase vehicles that receive at least a 4-star ANCAP rating.
