AAA Supports Government Safety Call on REVA

12.10.2006

The Australian Automobile Association –Australia's peak motoring body – has welcomed comments by Federal Roads Minister, Jim Lloyd, concerning safety aspects of the Reva Electric Vehicle.

AAA Director of Research and Policy, John Metcalfe, supported the Minister’s comments that, despite the Reva being allowed intoAustraliafor evaluation, it had not been presented for testing to see if it conformed to Australian Design Rules.

“While AAA acknowledges the need to look for environmentally positive alternatives to petrol or diesel powered vehicles, it is vital for Australian motorists and road users  that such vehicles are safe to drive on the road,” Mr Metcalfe said.

“Minister Lloyd has rightly raised safety concerns about the Reva – road safety still remains a major issue for AAA andAustralia’s motoring organisations.

“We support continued research and testing of alternatively powered vehicles, but they must be safe.  It must always be remembered that five people die on Australian roads every day and 60 are seriously injured.”
