+ High risk of life threatening chest injury in side impact test

Model History and Safety features

A driver's airbag is standard equipment. A passenger airbag is available as part of a safety package costing about $1500.

The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable. These features improve the fit of the seat belt.

Overall Evaluation: 2 Stars+

The Leganza did not perform well in the offset crash test (0.9pts out of 16). The passenger compartment was substantially deformed. The driver's contact with the airbag was unstable. The passenger hit the dash, with a moderate risk of life threatening head injury. Protection from serious leg injury was poor for the driver.

The vehicle performed better in the side impact crash (11.2pts out of 16) but there was a high risk of life threatening chest injury for the driver.

Chest 0.00 4.00
Upper legs 0.00 4.00
Lower legs 0.00 4.00
Score 0.90 16.00

The passenger compartment was substantially deformed in the offset crash test. The front part of the driver's floor was pushed rearwards 36cm and was severely folded. The brake pedal moved rearwards by 37cm, ending up within 12cm of the seat. The dash moved 24cm towards the driver. The roof buckled upwards above the driver and the width of the driver's doorway shortened by 19cm. All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash tools were required to open the driver’s door.

The airbag cushioned the head of the driver but the head then started to twist and rolled off the side of the airbag. The driver's knee hit a stiff metal bracket and tube behind the dash. The passenger's head hit the dash with a severe impact. The passenger's knees hit the glove box and dash.

Modifiers for offset test scores

The score generated from driver dummy data may be modified where the protection for different sized occupants or occupants in different seating positions, or accidents of slightly different severity, can be expected to be worse than that indicated by the dummy readings or deformation data alone. In any single body region, the score may reduce by up to a maximum of two points.

Head Steering wheel movement and unstable contact 2.00
Chest A-pillar movement and structural integrity 2.00
Upper leg Variable & contact 1.00 L & R

Score 11.20 16.00

The centre pillar and the side doors were pushed inwards substantially. The driver's seat was pushed sideways but the anchorages held.

The driver's head hit the centre pillar then rebounded. The head rocked severely to the left during rebound.

The vehicle was not eligible for a Pole Impact Test since it did not have head-protecting side airbags. This test can earn eligible vehicles an extra two points, giving a maximum possible overall score of 34 points.

Door Opening during the Impact

When a door opens in a side barrier test or a pole test, a minus one-point modifier will be applied to the score for that test. A one-point modifier will be applied for every door (including the tailgate) that opens.

Door Opening Forces after the Impact

A check is made to ensure that the doors on the non-struck side can be opened. The doors on the struck side are not opened.

Pole Test

The vehicle was not eligible for a Pole Impact Test since it did not have head-protecting side airbags. This test can earn eligible vehicles an extra two points, giving a maximum possible overall score of 34 points.

A one point modifier is applied if the head protection airbag does not deploy fully in the designed manner.
